Kingdom of Heaven, City of Hell

Kingdom of Heaven, City of Hell: The Münster RebellionThe Münster Rebellion of 1534-1535 stands as one of history's most catastrophic experiments in apocalyptic governance. When Anabaptist radicals seized control of this prosperous German city, they believed they were establishing the New Jerusalem where Christ would soon return. Instead, they created a nightmare of forced polygamy, religious terror, and mass starvation. This meticulously researched account traces the rebellion from its origins in legitimate reform grievances through its transformation into totalitarian theocracy. Drawing on eyewitness testimony, including the crucial account of Heinrich Gresbeck who ultimately betrayed the city, the narrative examines how intelligent, educated people became convinced that divine revelation justified actions that violated basic human dignity. The book centers the experiences of those who suffered most-particularly the women forced into polygamous marriages and the thousands who starved while the leadership lived in luxury. It profiles key figures including the charismatic prophet Jan Matthys, the theatrical king Jan van Leiden, and the pacifist reformer Menno Simons who rebuilt Anabaptism on principles of non-violence after the catastrophe.More than a historical account, this work explores timeless questions about religious extremism, apocalyptic thinking, and the dangers of absolute certainty. The iron cages that still hang from Münster's church tower serve as permanent warnings about what happens when conviction becomes tyranny.
