Angel's Egg - A Positronic Book

A quiet first-contact story of wonder, tenderness, and moral unease, Edgar Pangborn's Angel's Egg brings alien life into the human world not through invasion or conquest, but through mystery and fragile trust. When a strange egg arrives on Earth, the discovery opens into an encounter with beings whose intelligence, beauty, and vulnerability challenge ordinary assumptions about humanity's place in the universe.Pangborn's science fiction often favoured humane feeling over machinery, and Angel's Egg is a fine example of that gift. The story blends classic alien-contact science fiction with emotional restraint, ethical tension, and the golden-age sense that the unknown may be intimate as well as cosmic. Rather than turning first contact into spectacle, Pangborn makes it personal: a meeting across species, fear, sympathy, curiosity, and responsibility.First published in 1951, Angel's Egg appeared in Galaxy Science Fiction and is classed by ISFDB as novelette-length short fiction. It remains a strong fit for readers of classic science fiction, first-contact stories, alien intelligence, humane speculative fiction, and mid-century SF that explores not only what humanity might discover, but how humanity might behave when discovery becomes a moral test.
