Marks offers a practical philosophy and aesthetic theory for living in an infinitely connected cosmos. Drawing on the theories of Leibniz, Glissant, Deleuze, and theoretical physicist David Bohm-who each conceive of the universe as being folded in on itself in myriad ways-Marks contends that the folds of the cosmos are entirely constituted of living beings. From humans to sandwiches to software to stars, every entity is alive and occupies its own private enclosure inside the cosmos. Through analyses of fiction, documentary and experimental movies, interactive media, and everyday situations, Marks outlines embodied methods for detecting and augmenting the connections between each living entity and the cosmos. She shows that by affectively mediating with the ever-shifting folded relations within the cosmos, it is possible to build “soul-assemblages” that challenge information capitalism, colonialism, and other power structures and develop new connections with the infinite. With this guide for living within the enfolded and unfolding cosmos, Marks teaches readers to richly apprehend the world and to trace the processes of becoming that are immanent within the fold.
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0852/3081/3510/files/16c6a6a1c90a248f0b097dd9a57d332b62bbc8f976bb8321e75dd58694044c8a.jpg?v=1791568571
biorobotik-zur-einfuhrung
Biorobotik zur Einführung
Was ist Biorobotik? But what might it mean to take God as a model for virtue? This book investigates how Muslim thinkers developed this idea against a rich backdrop of historical reflection on the topic and how one particular intellectual, Ab¿ ¿¿mid al-Ghaz¿l¿, shaped the conversation. The idea that becoming virtuous means becoming like God has a long history. It was a calling card of Plato's philosophy and popular among many of the ancient philosophical schools. In the Islamic world, it assumed a vivid form at the hands of Sufi thinkers who took the beautiful names of God as the headline of a project of self-transformation. God's beautiful names aren't just objects for abstract understanding; they represent moral and spiritual ideals. Moved by both philosophical and Sufi inspirations, al-Ghaz¿l¿ casts the idea in a distinctive form which lets us into the sources of its fascination--and to the welter of questions it provokes. What, for example, does it even mean to ascribe virtues to God, given how closely the virtues seem to be tied to human limitations? Does the imitation of God set an achievable standard-and given the risks of aiming for it, should we even try? This everyday observation is the subject of an academic field that is often portrayed as confused and controversial, when in fact, the field of intelligence holds some of psychology's best-replicated findings.This Very Short Introduction describes what psychologists have discovered about how and why people differ in their thinking powers. Drawing on large scale data Ian Deary considers how many types of intelligence there are, and how intelligence changes with age. Along the way he tackles some of the most burning questions surrounding intelligence, such as whether larger brains are cleverer, and how genes and environments contribute to people's intelligence differences. He also considers the new field of cognitive epidemiology, which draws links between intelligence and better health, less illness, and longer life, and asks whether intelligence is increasing. In this new edition Deary also addresses the controversial question of whether men and women differ in intelligence. Throughout he provides a clear description of the data we can use to answer these questions and more.ABOUT THE SERIES: The Very Short Introductions series from Oxford University Press contains hundreds of titles in almost every subject area. Further, it argues that nonviolence is often misunderstood as a passive practice that emanates from a calm region of the soul, or as an individualist ethical relation to existing forms of power. But, in fact, nonviolence is an ethical position found in the midst of the political field. An aggressive form of nonviolence accepts that hostility is part of our psychic constitution, but values ambivalence as a way of checking the conversion of aggression into violence. One contemporary challenge to a politics of nonviolence points out that there is a difference of opinion on what counts as violence and nonviolence. The distinction between them can be mobilised in the service of ratifying the state’s monopoly on violence.

Considering nonviolence as an ethical problem within a political philosophy requires a critique of individualism as well as an understanding of the psychosocial dimensions of violence. Butler draws upon Foucault, Fanon, Freud, and Benjamin to consider how the interdiction against violence fails to include lives regarded as ungrievable. By considering how ‘racial phantasms’ inform justifications of state and administrative violence, Butler tracks how violence is often attributed to those who are most severely exposed to its lethal effects. The struggle for nonviolence is found in movements for social transformation that reframe the grievability of lives in light of social equality and whose ethical claims follow from an insight into the interdependency of life as the basis of social and political equality.
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0852/3081/3510/files/5e9c405d214b78da58e7ac0d94c4ecc5987ddefd3f4e35ec028d282a3e5247fb.jpg?v=1791598080
the-bloomsbury-handbook-of-simone-weil
The Bloomsbury Handbook of Simone Weil
Exploring the philosophical writings of Simone Weil, this extensive work documents the key thinkers who influenced her political, philosophical and religious outlook. It asks what follows when we make our desires and even our own happiness conditional on the happiness of others: “I just want you to be happy”; “I’m happy if you’re happy.” Combining philosophy and feminist cultural studies, Sara Ahmed reveals the affective and moral work performed by the “happiness duty,” the expectation that we will be made happy by taking part in that which is deemed good, and that by being happy ourselves, we will make others happy. Ahmed maintains that happiness is a promise that directs us toward certain life choices and away from others. Happiness is promised to those willing to live their lives in the right way. Ahmed draws on the intellectual history of happiness, from classical accounts of ethics as the good life, through seventeenth-century writings on affect and the passions, eighteenth-century debates on virtue and education, and nineteenth-century utilitarianism. She engages with feminist, antiracist, and queer critics who have shown how happiness is used to justify social oppression, and how challenging oppression causes unhappiness. Reading novels and films including Mrs. Dalloway, The Well of Loneliness, Bend It Like Beckham, and Children of Men, Ahmed considers the plight of the figures who challenge and are challenged by the attribution of happiness to particular objects or social ideals: the feminist killjoy, the unhappy queer, the angry black woman, and the melancholic migrant. Through her readings she raises critical questions about the moral order imposed by the injunction to be happy.
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0852/3081/3510/files/98f40333942bb4052ea5bcf663de1e88728f61d86b4e7006dda67605ba9f3421.jpg?v=1791615694
den-diskurs-bestreiten
Intertwined, one holding the next, transforming into another, in dialogue with the one(s) before and after. You may find this conversation between letters is also a conversation between the many yous you have been - and the one you've not yet met. Letters as contenders; words as worlds and routes to transformation within their structure.The Stage(s) We Build is a habitat for thought, and a stage for transformation - for understanding something too well, or not at all. An acknowledgment that not everything needs an answer, but every question you ask (yourself) matters. A non-linear storytelling via pattern and resonance - a path that leads you nowhere but into yourself.There are no page numbers, no index, no prescribed order of reading. A is(n't) the beginning and Z is(n't) the end. You are free to wander: to take it front to back, or in loops of your own making, following the branches of your own brain in real time until you arrive in a place you did not expect - where the parts of you that never speak to each other begin to murmur, and then to sing. To let the words lead you where your thoughts already want to go.The Stage(s) We Build is a participatory experience you are an interpreter and co-creator of. Pa3 deliberately illuminates some of the parallel strata of meaning through bolding, underlining, refragmentation, and cipher codes. Others will surface only when you touch them with your own light and brain branches.This book is a different ecosystem with each pair of eyes. It changes with each beholder, widening on contact. You are in the book - and you are the book: a breathing collaboration between writer, reader, and the alphabet itself.
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0852/3081/3510/files/9c30fca72fe9d0665eb8efec29a094d6c32c12ae7bee970e3d7ae7fa760267bd.jpg?v=1791625998
notes-toward-a-performative-theory-of-assembly
Notes Toward a Performative Theory of Assembly
A Times Higher Education Book of the Week

Judith Butler elucidates the dynamics of public assembly under prevailing economic and political conditions, analyzing what they signify and how.

Understanding assemblies as plural forms of performative action, Butler extends her theory of performativity to argue that precarity-the destruction of the conditions of livability-has been a galvanizing force and theme in today's highly visible protests.

"Butler's book is everything that a book about our planet in the 21st century should be. In recovering Spinoza's relevance to contemporary political phenomena, Cernadas explains why this early modern thinker has found renewed importance three hundred and fifty years after his death, and ultimately how he could even prompt us to reassess democracy as the best form of government.
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0852/3081/3510/files/73ca525e7a3ee8ef7647d287aeb27c517d70bff152ba2fa77877a11748f5bdfe.jpg?v=1791636518
the-conspiracy-against-the-human-race
The Conspiracy against the Human Race
In Thomas Ligotti's first nonfiction outing, an examination of the meaning (or meaninglessness) of life through an insightful, unsparing argument that proves the greatest horrors are not the products of our imagination but instead are found in reality.

"There is a signature motif discernible in both works of philosophical pessimism and supernatural horror.
